Bayer's Green Roof 

There’s something growing on the roof at Bayer. And the only way you can see it is via Google Maps. (Or by clicking this link.)

Building on their commitment to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, Bayer has constructed an 8,000 square foot Green Roof at their Belfield Road facility in Toronto.

Constructed in the fall of 2007 on a building built in 2001, the Green Roof was installed to help Bayer realize a number of benefits, including:

  • Controlling the building's micro-climate and the need for air conditioning and heating;
  • Improving local air quality by increasing the number of organisms absorbing carbon dioxide and other air contaminants;
  • Reducing the roof's temperature and its contribution to the urban heat island effect (increased urban temperature due to thermal mass of buildings and dark roofs absorbing heat); and,
  • Controlling stormwater runoff and the amount of water discharged into local sewers and streams.
