“Polaris Realty’s cool roof”

When Polaris Realty realized its building at 2700 Matheson Blvd. East in Mississauga needed some rehabilitation - including a new roof - the company
decided to pursue Leadership in Energy Efficiency and Design (LEED) certification for existing buildings.

Approach Highlights

► Used mostly recycled materials and reused existing insulation.

► Employed a Tremco dual layered waterproofing system, which can last as long as the building.

► Covered the roof with white calcite, a reflective stone.

Results

► Reduced summertime temperature on the roof by over 20 degrees celsius.

► Reduced the building’s contribution to the urban heat island effect caused by the excess absorption of solar heat common with darker coloured roofs.

► Minimal waste to landfill.
