| Thinking 'outside the box' - an innovative solution to water consumption |
|
As Calstone continues to look at ways to reduce their environmental footprint, they wanted to find a way to eliminate the need for watering their outside plants. These plants are located in recessed planters in front of all the Calstone office windows and therefore don't get direct rain fall. All plants are typically watered once a week using a combination of rain water collected on the roof and city water from early spring until late fall. Calstone found a simple solution: by installing an innovative water catcher (designed and built by Calstone) at the top of each window opening of the building, they can catch and direct the rain water to the plants. Calstone’s water catcher is a trough system with perforated holes in the bottom to allow rain water collected to flow downward over plants. By incorporating these rain catchers they can eliminate the use of city water all together.
