In 1948, Lem Janes Sr. made the journey from Estonia in Northern Europe to Halifax Nova Scotia where he set to work in one of Canada?s largest fisheries. Trained as a food technician in Estonia, he personally helped pioneer frozen food technology in the Maritimes. In 1969, together with a couple of partners, he founded Grimm?s Foods in Concord Ontario. Not surprisingly, the company specialized in frozen breaded and battered seafood products for the Foodservice Industry; catering to hotels, restaurants, hospitals and school cafeterias. Grimm?s prospered through the decade following and in 1979 the Janes Family became the sole owner. Throughout the 80's and into the early 90's the company enjoyed sustained, robust growth. In 1992, Grimm?s changed its name to Janes Family Foods Ltd. and entered the retail marketplace with a new premium product line under the Janes Family Favourites trademark.
