| Sustainable Energy Plan Spotlight - Jervis B. Webb Improves Energy Performance |
|
|
With the assistance of 360 Energy, Jervis B Webb launched a hands-on Energy Management Program in the summer of 2009. Using 360 Energy’s approach to conserving and procuring energy we developed a cross-functional team that involved personnel from finance, procurement, plant management, maintenance, safety and environmental to ensure true organizational integration of the program.
As part of its Energy Management Program, Jervis B Webb developed a roadmap to improve its energy performance. A detailed action plan was created with assistance from 360 Energy to ensure that a systematic process was in place to measure performance. The action plan is regularly updated, most often on a weekly basis, to reflect recent achievements, changes in performance, and shifting priorities.

Calstone reducing resource use with remanufacturing
Calstone strives to produce the highest quality products, balancing economic and social costs to meet customer demands. Calstone is accomplishing this goal by establishing a company-wide management system to ensure the products they produce and their methods of manufacturing are done in the most environmentally sound ways possible.
Calstone already recycles a majority of the cardboard packaging it uses for shipping, and diverts rainwater with a 2,000-gallon tank to cool machinery, and many other initiatives are planned to help Calstone minimize their impact on the environment. These include projects such as installing a green roof and a solar wall that will reduce the company’s energy use by a minimum of 30% annually. Their initiatives to improve the environment have been widely recognized, granting them a position at the 2010 Canadian Pollution Prevention Roundtable as both a presenter and member of the Steering Committee. The company was also a recipient of a (CCME) Pollution Prevention Award in the Small Business Category in 2009, among other awards.

Toronto Congress Center builds sustainability into its facility
response to customer demand for more exposition, meeting, and private function space, TCC began the renovation of its unused north section in 2006. TCC’s Vice President, Customer Experience and Corporate Communications, Cara Carey, states that the massive new addition originated in part, from the company’s reputation of providing the best customer experience of any facility, anywhere in the world. TTC takes great pride in providing quality customer experience, and has also trademarked its ideology as GEM™ , or Great Experience Makers™.
In 2006, TCC set the goal of creating an eco-friendly, multipurpose facility to exemplify the company’s leadership role in providing superior customer experience. NORR Ltd. Architects of Toronto, who were brought on board to re-engineer the space, produced a revolutionary design that transformed the space into a state-of-the-art facility, complimenting the adjacent trade show centre. This facility uses less energy, less water, more fresh air and natural light, with fewer toxins and less waste than other facilities of its kind. The TCC North facility also includes a massive lobby area with plenty of natural light, 500,000 square feet of exhibition space, 30 meeting rooms, and a 25,000 square-foot ballroom.

Tenant engagement key to GWL Realty Advisors’ green goals
GWL Realty Advisors Inc. (GWL) is well recognized for greening its managed assets portfolio – which includes 240 commercial properties (42.8 million square feet) across Canada. And, GWL says, tenant buy-in is key to reducing energy use and GHG emissions.
For example, the company informs tenants of environmental goals in their building and the practices that will help reach those targets. Not only do tenants pitch in, but they also use their local knowledge of the building to refine the goals and the ways to achieve them. Typically tenants pay direct utility costs and contribute to common utility expenses on a pro-rated basis per square foot – serious motivation.
