Smart Commute Mississauga celebrates five years serving the commuting needs of local employees

This month, Smart Commute Mississauga will be celebrating a milestone in transportation demand management - its five year anniversary. Since its inception in March 2006, Smart Commute Mississauga has helped employers and employee commuters reduce an impressive 6.9 million total vehicle kilometres (km), save 1.5 million kilograms (kg) of greenhouse gas emissions and approximately $3.5 million in commuter savings. The organization is part of a network of Transportation Management Associations (TMAs) across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) that works with over 150 employers and 350,000 employees.

The TMA’s success can be attributed to its signature workplace program, the Carpool Zone, which currently has over 30,000 registered users across the GTHA. In addition to the Carpool Zone, other popular programs such as the Discount Transit Program and the newly launched ACTIVATE Your Commute, Walking & Cycling Program, which received a Community Grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, provide employees with unique commuting alternatives to single occupancy vehicle travel.
