Energy Management course focuses on team building and energy savings

“We want course participants to go beyond book knowledge to become energy champions establishing an energy management team and enabling a culture change at their workplace,” says Phil McKay, Project Coordinator at the University of Windsor’s Faculty of Engineering, as he describes the upcoming Advanced Professional Certificate in Energy Management offered through the university in partnership with the Ontario Power Authority.

The course, which runs from January 17 to 19, 2011, builds on the success of similar courses held over the past year. The most recent one, offered in September 2010, was attended by a range of participants, including representatives from the mining, food and beverage sectors and from utilities and energy providers. One of the participants, Onorio D’Agostini, Plant Manager at Hiram Walker and Sons in Windsor, Ontario, says, “I appreciated the overall scope and the utility of the information presented.”

Centre for Health and Safety Innovation sees innovation in lighting 

Being so strongly committed to health, safety, and wellness, the Centre for Health and Safety Innovation (CHSI) naturally sought opportunities to enhance its achievements related to environmental sustainability.

The journey began in 2005/06 during the design, construction and move-in phases, when CHSI maximized natural day light in office suites through large areas of glazing and placement of workstations by windows, installed a building automation system (BAS) for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, undertook HVAC air balancing, and tenants agreed to share back-office functions and amenities including a common reception, cafeteria, mailroom, resource centre, fitness centre and meeting/ training rooms.

Green chemistry at Fielding Chemical Technologies

It burns Ellen McGregor to see manufacturers send chemical waste to be incinerated. Organic chemicals are derived from oil, says the president of Fielding Chemical Technologies Inc. “When a manufacturer chooses to burn their chemical waste, they are burning a non-renewable resource.”
